Why I love Healing Touch so much!

By Mary Pat Hank

I suffered with fibromyalgia for about twenty years! I always had physical pain and with that came emotional pain, too! The pain moved around my body and the simplest things would cause me pain, like pushing my kids in the grocery cart. My muscles ached like I had the flu and I was exhausted much of the time. I felt sad because I couldn’t do what I used to do. I even switched jobs to see if less stress helped me feel better, but it didn’t. My primary physician sent me to a neurologist, who put me on antidepressants. Then I decided to see a psychiatrist for psychotherapy and he added an antianxiety medicine to my medications. But I still felt awful so I started to seek alternative ways to feel better. There were several modalities that helped me but I was paying for them out of my own pocket. I took out a home equity loan to pay for all the treatments, which my husband was not too happy about, but I truly did not want to continue to live in pain. I believed that I could heal if I just found the right treatment.

In 2009, while attending the American Holistic Nurses Association convention in Madison, WI, I came across the Healing Touch Program information booth.  My mother had also suffered with pain for many years with migraines and rheumatoid arthritis and I had found a Therapeutic Touch Practitioner to come to her house to see if she could help her. It was quite amazing how much more comfortable my mom was after she received the treatments. So I asked the people at the booth what was the difference between Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch and they smiled and handed me a brochure and told me to check out their website.

As soon as I got home I went to their website and found out that Therapeutic Touch was one of the modalities that Janet Mentgen studied and incorporated into Healing Touch Program.  Janet Mentgen was the founder of Healing Touch and studied many different healing modalities. The website was very informative, and I looked to see where the classes were being held, and when I found a class that was being held in Chicago at Jesse Brown VA Hospital I contacted the instructor. I was very fortunate because the class had been full but someone had to cancel so I got the last spot.

I learned so much in that class. I learned several different Healing Touch techniques that I could do on myself and on my family members. Healing Touch Program really stresses the importance of self-care and the instructor challenged us to do the Self Chakra Connection technique on ourselves for 21 days straight and notice any changes. I did it faithfully for 21 days and felt so much better. I was thrilled that I didn’t have to pay anyone for these treatments and I wanted to learn more. Over the next several years I progressed through the five levels and became a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner.

I continued to feel better, the more I learned and the more I practiced.  I have been off all medications for several years now and my home equity loan is paid off. I am so grateful for my health and I want to help other people be well also. That’s why I have become a Healing Touch Certified Instructor and will be teaching my first Healing Touch Level 1 class in Madison on November 10 & 11.
